The Global Population of 1955 Is on Social Media... [Infographic]

That sounds positively mad, doesn't it? But it's true...

In 1955 there were 2.8 billion people and at this very moment there is now 2.8 billion people on social media.

Of course, the population of 1955 were experiencing completely different to selfies and Twitter trends.

Instead, 1955 is known for the deaths of Albert Einstein and James Dean, the release of Lady and the Tramp and Rebel Without A Cause (James Dean), plus it was still the height of Rock 'n' Roll, with Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry and Bill Haley & His Comets taking over the charts. 

When it comes to technology, 1955 was the year of the Polio vaccine, the patent for Velcro is invented and the first wireless TV remote control is also invented. So it was quite literally a lifetime away from social media!

What are those 2.8bn people doing on social media?

There are a lot of people on social media...

2.8bn active social media users worldwide (as of Jan 2017) - that's a +22% increase from last year.

However, they're all on different platforms: 

  • 28% are on one site
  • 24% on two sites
  • 16% on three sites
  • 8% on four sites
  • 4% on five sites

 

Facebook retains its popularity

There are 1.9bn unique monthly users - of which they're predominantly female.

  • 83% of online women
  • 75% of online men

 

This is the best place to reach Millennials and Generation X (aged 18-49).

Generation X spends almost 7 hours per week on social media

An incredible 75% of users spend 20 minutes or more on Facebook every day!

Instagram is the fastest growing platform

600 million unique monthly users, with a predominantly female demographic.

  • 38% of online women
  • 26% of online men

 

90% of Instagram users are under 35

Also 53% of users on Instagram follow brands.

Twitter is the most over saturated social platform

There are 317 million unique monthly users, and on Twitter the audience is predominantly male.

  • 22% of online men
  • 15% of online women

 

This platform is made up mostly of 18-29 year olds.

53% of Twitter users never post any updates.

The Twitter audience spends an incredibly short amount of time on the mobile app - 2.7 minutes.

Professionals are found on LinkedIn

this platform has 106 millions unique monthly users, with a slightly male audience.

  • 31% of online men
  • 27% of online women

 

LinkedIn users are typically slightly less likely to use other networks.
