Snapchat Update 'Snap Map' and What You Need to Know as a Parent or User

Following the recent Snapchat update, you should ensure that your settings - or your child's settings - are safe.

Snapchat launched a new feature last week, the Snap Map, which allows you to view snaps from people all around the world, but also allows your location and that of your friends to be available.

Both iOS and Android users around the world now have this update.

When you are first updated with this feature, you are given the option to either:

  1. Allow everyone to see your location
  2. Allow your friends to see your location
  3. Use the app in 'Ghost Mode' - only you can see your location

Parents are being advised to ensure their children use Ghost Mode, otherwise their location could be seen by anybody around the world - including where they go to school and where your home is.

If you use Ghost Mode, however, you can still search the Snap Map and see your friends locations but they can't see yours.

Snaps uploaded to 'Our Story' which features selected snaps now are placed on the Snap Map in the location they were taken. There are hot spots across the UK - and the world - where your snap will now appear instead.

Parents and users of all ages are being warned to ensure they have thought carefully about their security and safety. Parents are being advised by a number of outlets and schools across the country to be wary of their child's security settings - even if they only have family members on their friends list.

If you want to double check that you/your child has enabled Ghost Mode follow these instructions:

  1. Tap your bitmoji or the 'Settings' icon in the upper right-hand corner
  2. Choose to enable/disable Ghost Mode
  3. You can also select to choose only certain friends that can see your location

These changes are effective immediately, but can be changed at any time via your settings.
