Friday 10 April 2020

By Sarah Burns

We’ve handpicked some excellent TED talks to help you work from home, or unwind if you’ve been furloughed, whilst we all battle through the COVID-19 outbreak.

So, let’s just ban the following words for the next hour or so...

  • Boris Johnson
  • Coronavirus
  • COVID-19
  • Furloughed
  • Lockdown
  • Pandemic
  • Supermarkets
  • Toilet roll
  • Virus

...whilst you unwind, forget the world and enjoy some brilliant TED talks… which I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to watch myself, for blog research purposes, of course…

1. How to be your best self in times of crisis

Susan David - 46 minutes

Susan David's special virtual conversation which is new to TED and specifically created amid the coronavirus pandemic (I won't mention it again!) is a must-watch for anyone (that's all of us) impacted by the turbulence surrounding us right now.

This is also a follow-up to the brilliant The Gift and Power of Emotional Courage, which comes in at #2 on this list...

2. The gift and power of emotional courage

Susan David - 17 minutes

A 2017 TED talk recognising how our emotions shape every aspect of our lives, as well as how setting up strategies for emotional agility can impact the way we move forward in life. A must watch.

3. All it takes is 10 mindful minutes

Andy Puddicombe - 10 minutes

A simplistic talk at its essence that questions, 'when was the last time you did nothing for 10 minutes?'.

Of course, given the times it may have been more recently than normal, and certainly unusual for you, but just think about what you can open your mind to if you allow yourself the time to do so.

4. 3 questions to ask yourself about everything you do

Stacey Abrams - 13 minutes

When you have a setback how do you respond? Stacey questions and challenges our behaviour in the aftermath of a setback allowing us as watchers to rethink our emotional and actual response to particular actions.

5. The puzzle of motivation

Dan Pink - 19 minutes

Motivation is difficult to find, and it can often be as equally difficult to pinpoint the source of motivation we do get. Dan's talk surprises listeners with the notion that traditional rewards aren't often successful at motivating positive results...
