Whether it’s running a small project or an international campaign, a strong team leader needs to possess certain qualities in order to guide their team to success.

Good leadership within a business is essential. A team that doesn’t value their leader’s efforts will not run as efficiently as those who do.

Ever heard the phrase, ‘leaders are born, not made’? The traits of a strong team leader tend to be naturally attributed to that person, rather than developed.

If you’re ready to move up the ladder and take charge of a team, here are some qualities you should be demonstrating…

Fair and Impartial

A great leader is one that recognises the efforts of their team members.

If someone steps out of line, they will reprimand them accordingly. On the flip side, they will reward those who go up and beyond.

Motivator

While micromanaging can be ineffective, it’s important that a leader motivates and checks up on their team regularly. An encouraging pep talk can boost team morale, creating a positive workforce.

Resilient

Life comes with setbacks, that’s a fact. The road to success is never straight forward, but filled with twists and turns. A great team leader can be knocked back and get straight back up on their feet again, for the sake of the business and their team.

Confident and Knowledgeable

No one will respect a teacher that isn’t knowledgeable about their subject matter. It’s essential to demonstrate that you know your stuff so that your team members value your leadership. You want to be integral to the business, not a hindrance.

Organised

Not only will a lack of organisation set back your project but it will also disturb your team’s performance. You need to be able to take charge and assign tasks in order to make use of the resources you have available. Time equals money, after all.

Responsible

A responsible team leader will own up to mistakes and be accountable for their team. There’s no point playing the blame game as this will ultimately cause a divide. You need to be able to admit that fault within your team lies with your leadership.

Relatable

Possibly one of the most important qualities on this list is relatability. If you can’t see eye to eye with your team, how can you possibly expect to develop a strong, trusting relationship?

However, you shouldn’t overstep the mark as you don’t want to lose sight of the business side of things. Reinforce your role as a leader but allow those in your team to confide in you and share any problems or issues.
