A Round Up of Super Bowl 50

Monday 15 February 2016

13 minute read

By Sarah Burns

Super Bowl 50 took place on Sunday 7th February and if you stayed up to watch the event on BBC or Sky you will have witnessed the exciting build-up, the Broncos beat the Panthers and the half time show.

In America, the Super Bowl is a huge event for advertisement campaigns too, with marketers stepping up their efforts thanks to the incredible audience numbers it draws.

Although we're a UK marketing agency, it's worth exploring just how lucrative a Super Bowl ad spot can be and some of the biggest adverts that formed part of the 2016 Super Bowl hysteria.

It's interesting that the UK doesn't have a similar advertising opportunity to compare to.

This year's televised event has been ranked as the third largest for audience numbers ever, with an average audience of 111.9 million (Nielson / Variety).

Lady Gaga stuns with National Anthem performance

Lady Gaga has for all of her time in the spotlight been like marmite - we love her or we hate her. Everyone has an opinion at least. Some might have raised eyebrows at the decision to have her sing the pre-game National Anthem, but she will have shut them up instantly. She was AMAZING!

Beyonce almost fell down

It was a slip up made in such a fashion you'd be mistaken for not realising it wasn't on purpose! During Beyonce's incredibly energetic dance routine she missed her step and fell backwards mid squat, which made us gasp, but she recovered as though it was on purpose! We still think you rocked it, Bey!

Half time show - Chris Martin / Beyonce / Bruno Mars

As fellow Brits we thought Coldplay was an interesting selection in comparison to previous years - Katy Perry, Destiny's Child - but we enjoyed the beginning of the half time show. Although when Beyonce and Bruno Mars started strutting their stuff it did seem that Chris was left a little on the sidelines. He's a genius at what he does, but dancing is probably not one of those things. As a result, some slightly unfair comments (as collated by Mashable) and some funny memes and GIFs were produced...

^^ This is the "left shark" from Katy Perry's 2015 Halftime Show performance that stole the show for dancing out of time with everybody else (he is replacing Chris Martin in this year's show in this GIF).
