Shadowbans, algorithms, Instagram Stories... If you've been out of the loop or just getting started, here's how to up your Instagram game.

Instagram has recently undergone lots of changes, mainly with their algorithm and how your feed displays, which is why it's important to pay more attention to get more comments and engagement on your company's Instagram profile.

  • Instagram algorithm: There are allegedly seven key factors, according to Buffer, Engagement, Relevancy, Relationships, Timeliness, Profile Searches, Direct Shares and Time Spent. These factors indicate how your post will appear in feeds.
  • Shadowban: Your hashtags have gone rogue, or to be serious, "un-discoverable". Your hashtags will now only show up to the feeds of your current followers. This means that anyone who DOESN'T follow you - often who we're trying to attract - won't see them!
  • Instagram Stories: New tool that allows you to create short videos that people can watch from your profile or their feed - similar to Snapchat.

01. Host a giveaway

Post on Instagram a contest or giveaway and ask users to enter by commenting on the post itself.

Alternatively, make a UGC campaign (User Generated Content campaign) and ask users to post their own photos and mention your brand @ or #.

02. Post something a bit "different"

If you're a finance company or in an industry where formality and professionalism is key, it doesn't hurt to post something a bit 'different'.

Why not post a quirky lunch from your team member or a quick staff photo? If you can't usually do that April Fool's Day and Christmas are both perfect excuses to think outside the box.

03. Use video

Videos are still on the rise. Rather than just posting photos, venture into the realm of video. Instagram makes it really easy to do with Boomerang and Rewind features.

04. Select hashtags carefully

In light of the recent shadowban, Instagram hashtags should be used carefully and only when relevant. These hashtags work really well in allowing new people to discover your content.

05. People's faces and animals =   ❤️️

People love people. And dogs. Or cats. Or virtually any animal selfie.

"Posts with human faces are 32% more likely to attract comments -- and 38% more likely to garner likes."
