If you’re on Instagram or in the social media department of your business, you’re sure to have come across Instagram Stories.

The new addition to Instagram is found via that new bar of circles with photos of your connections along the top of your app.

Of course, the cynics among you have already drawn the startlingly obvious comparisons to Snapchat and this seemingly close attempt at rivalling the video-sharing app.

The benefits, being that you can put all of your photos, videos and “Stories” into one app, rather than investing time in two.

Instagram Stories allows you to post as many photo and video updates that form the “story” of your hour, day, week and life. After 24 hours, your story disappears in the same way that your Snapchat story disappears.

See the similarities yet?

Of course, people can still “screenshot” your stories, in the same way they can with Snapchat and you also get lots of cool editing tools, again, like you do with Snapchat.

If your business is already on Instagram, this is a much easier way to share updates from your company, rather than trying to build a Snapchat audience as well, so if you ever wanted to try video and photo updates, this is a great way to try it out. Find out more, via Instagram, here.

Will it overtake Snapchat in popularity? Facebook-owned platform Instagram does stand a chance in comparison to other features that Facebook has – albeit, more cleverly – adopted, including Riff and Poke, thanks to the much improved design and user capabilities.

Instagram Stories is much more enjoyable to use and its features are much clearer, it now means that rather than Instagram changing, Snapchat must develop instead.

The difficulty of Snapchat’s design and features was once a “plus” sign for teens that didn’t want parents prying (as they do on Facebook), but it now may be its downfall too.

The Verge has done an excellent comparison of the platforms and Snapchat’s need to improve – read it here.
