We get a lot of questions about the importance of joining social media and taking part in online conversations.

LinkedIn is a network that should be engaged with more by professionals, particularly in the B2B and non-profit sectors.

Why? They rely on their business connections and need to not only be part of the conversation, but respond to the conversations taking place about them or their industry.

Once you've set up your professional profile, you should join a group.

"LinkedIn Groups provide a place for professionals in the same industry or with similar interests to share content, find answers, post and view jobs, make business contacts, and establish themselves as industry experts."

The Groups feature has powerful community management features that aren't available on other platforms and allows you to network with like-minded businesspeople, based on your field or interests.

Having an active LinkedIn group creates a forum for your customers and audience to connect, allowing your company to reach a targeted audience and establish real relationships.

How to use LinkedIn Groups

You shouldn't use a Group - yours or someone else's - for advertisements, it's a way to share challenges, potential opportunities and information you've found that can be discussed. By participating in the "right" way in Groups you can do wonders for your brand's online reputation, whether that's a location-specific or industry-related Group.

Our fast tips for using LinkedIn Groups successfully are as follows:

  • Recognise the things your members say and encourage further engagement
  • Link the best conversations in your Group to other social channels and encourage new members
  • Ask lots of questions about topics and members opinions, instead of vague feedback
  • Make the most of your new found connections to solve staffing issues - ask fellow employers for help, engage with potential jobseekers
  • Generate leads using the Groups 'Search' function, filtering by job title, company and location. Using this list of prospects, send personalised messages.
  • Research! How can you make your business more efficient or effective? Look at your Group members for inspiration - learn from both the bad and good.
