HubSpot's Hashtags Recommendations for Twitter in 2018

Twitter is a numbers game. Go back a few years ago and we were obsessed - as businesses - with getting a particular amount of followers, or engagement on our tweets.

Today, that hasn't particularly changed, although there is a lot of competition for the microblogging platform - which now boasts a doubled character limit of 280, rather than the classic 140 - from Facebook, Instagram and even, LinkedIn.

We are proud to be behind two rather successful pieces of North East Twitter content - our UK hashtags and North East hashtags guides - plus the co-founders of the fantastic #AycliffeHour (Thursdays, 3-4pm).

Over the years, attitudes have changed to Twitter, but interestingly, recent HubSpot research suggests that hashtags are still crucial to Twitter's success.

HubSpot's key findings were:

  • Twitter hashtags correlate with a 1,065% increase in engagement.
  • Tweets with no hashtags averaged 1.7 interactions per tweet.
  • #ico, the most popular hashtag, had an average of 19.8 interactions per tweet.

HubSpot's results revealed that these 10 hashtags were the most successful in getting likes on Twitter.

"We used a dataset of tweets ranging from January 2017 to May 2018. Hashtags were only included if they occurred in a minimum of 300 tweets, by at least 100 unique accounts." [Source: HubSpot]

Of course, this is a relatively loose study, based on hashtags that will have, for the most part, been most successful because of the national holiday/awareness day or "hot topic" they related to.

At Thrive, we recommend using these findings as a guide. Hashtags are most successful when they follow a popular topic or common subject of conversation.
